The original picture was furnished to the newspaper by George Callahan, a former Deputy State Mine Inspector. The below scanned copy of the actual newspaper article was provided by a descendant of Blanch Emma Thorpe.
The below picture was taken on or about 1927, at Doe Run Shaft No. 13, near Leadington, St. Francois County, Missouri. It was known as No. 9 Mine which St. Joe Lead Company bought from Federal Lead Company in 1923.

Homer Oliver Thorpe (a/k/a - Homer Thorpe)
Information provided on 7/26/2009, by a descendant of Blanch Emma Thorpe:
Homer Oliver Thorpe was born on October 23, 1899, in St. Mary, Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. He married Hallie Fern Beard on February 23, 1920, location unknown. He died from the result of a mining accident on October 10, 1953, at Bonne Terre Hospital, Bonne Terre, St. Francois County, Missouri.
