George Schifferdecker served aboard the USS South Dakota during the 1940's.

George Schifferdecker was in M Div. MM1/C.

The ship was also known as "BB57", and "Battleship X". During the Santa Cruz Battle on October 26, 1942, the crew of BB57 shot down 32 Japanese airplanes. Also, the first gunfire against the Japanese Homeland was launched from the USS South Dakota on July 14, 1945.
