John Lewis

John Lewis was born Dec. 25, 1856, near Yount, in Perry County, Mo., the son of Wm. and Elizabeth Mitchell Lewis.

He was married July 20, 1880, to Mary Elizabeth Miller, Yount, Mo. To this union fourteen children were born - William, Emma, Charles T., Frank S., Anna, Jeff H., Minnie, May, Maggie, Myrtle, Fred, Grace, Peter and Ruth.

He became a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge at Mine La Motte, Mo., about 37 years ago.

Mr. Lewis was working in Mine La Motte Mining and Smelting Co., in the blacksmith shop, at the time of his marriage in 1880 and continued his work for this company until 1903 when he purchased the fine farm near Libertyville in St. Francois County on which he passed away and had made it his home ever since.

He joined the Christian Church at Libertyville in 1914 and had been a faithful Christian in that faith.

Mr. Lewis was a quite, unassuming Christian man, at all times looking toward helping his fellowmen and was indeed a good citizen. He was also one of the most successful progressive farmers in the county. He loved his home and was a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind and helpful neighbor and while his going will be greatly felt by his loved ones the community will also feel the loss almost severely.

Mr. Lewis died after an illness of a few weeks of pneumonia on April 7, 1932, at 7:35 p.m. at the age of 75 years, three months and 12 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. Mary E. Lewis, and the following children: Fred and Ruth, at home; William, of Esther; Frank, of St. Louis; Anna (Mrs. W. B.) Watts, of Centralia, Ill.; Jeff H., of Cross Roads; Minnie (Mrs. Geo.) Crump, of Leadwood; Maggie (Mrs. Harve) Carson, Grace (Mrs. James) Bauer and Peter Lewis, the latter three all of Detroit, Mich. Emma (Mrs. Henry) Crump, May and Myrtle and Charles Lewis preceded their father into the Great Beyond. He also leaves one brother, Peter Lewis, of Farmington, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, besides a host of friends to mourn his death.

Funeral services were conducted at the Libertyville Christian Church by the Pastor, Rev. C. F. Rose, Sunday afternoon, April 16th, and were attended by one of the largest gatherings that has been seen in the community in many years. The Fredericktown I. O. O. F. Lodge officiated in the burial service at the Libertyville cemetery.
