Robert Bartley "Bert" Gosnell was born in October of 1874 in Paint Creek, Greene County, Tenn. and died Sunday, Aug. 26, 1906 in Grapevine, Madison County, N.C. He was buried in the Grapevine Baptist Church cemetery.

He was the son of Solomon "Sol" Dudley and Margaret Elizabeth Sams Gosnell. His three half brothers were George Henderson Gosnell, Milford Wade Gosnell, Wiley Sylvester Gosnell. His two sisters were Pollie Melvina Gosnell Allen and Jeanetta "Jennie" Gosnell Clark. His one brother was William Wallace Rollins Gosnell.

He was a Pvt. in Co. M, 42nd Regt., Infantry, US. Volunteers during the Fillipino Insurrection from 1899 to 1900.

He was married April 22, 1901 at Green Street Baptist Church in Spartan Mill, Spartanburg, S.C. to Mary Elizabeth "Mary Liz" Lewis (Sept. 5, 1877 to Feb. 19, 1917). She was the daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Coates Lewis of Grapevine, Madison County, N.C.

Their children were Effie Belle (1902 to 1977) married to Arthur Fender; Roy Burns (1904 to 1971) married to Mary Lou Propst; infant son (1905); and Irene Bertie (1906 to 1993) married first to Dewey Ernest Peek and second to William "Dock" Fox.

They have seven grandchildren (five deceased), six great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, two step-great-great-grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-great-grandchildren, 2006.
