Damian "Dan" Daniels Wagner joined the Union Army at Alton, Illinois on March 28, 1864 at the age of 18 years old. He was assigned to Company H, 97 regiment, Illinois infantry. His enlistment was for 3 years. He fought in the Mobile and Red River Campaigns. On July 29, 1865, he was transferred to Company E, 37th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out at Houston, Texas on May 15, 1866. His brother, Philipp "Fridor" Isidore Wagner, also joined the Army at the same time and they were in the same Company. Damian and Philipp arrived home two months after the death of their father, Leonhard "Leonard" Wagner.
